Name of creator
The Alberta Society of Petroleum Geologists was founded in 1927 as an umbrella organization for geologists in various businesses and at the University of Alberta. It goal was “to promote and further the study of petroleum geology and its related sciences”. Papers were published to give a theoretical base to exploration in western Canada, and in 1950 the first ASPG Field Conference was held in Banff. In 1955 The Journal of the Alberta Society of Petroleum Geologists was first published. The society hosted the First International Symposium on the Geology of the Arctic in 1960, and in 1964 it published The Geology of Western Canada. The ASPG became the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists in January 1973, and the CSPG continues to provide its members with updates in petroleum and related sciences; personal contact with other practicing geologists; opportunities to take part in field trips, field conferences and core conferences; continuing education opportunities; and professional recognition through an awards program. The CSPG also hosts significant conferences and symposia, and produces various geological publications, including The Bulletin of Canadian Petroleum Geology (journal) and Reservoir (newsletter). In 1996 the society had approximately 3300 members. For further information see Field Notes : The Story of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists / David Finch. -- Calgary : Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, 2002.
Part of this fonds was donated first to the University of Calgary Library, which subsequently transferred the records to the Glenbow Archives.
