Administrative history
The Canadian Public Relations Society (Alberta) was organized in 1957 in Calgary, Alberta to promote and advance public relations expertise in the Calgary area. The society was incorporated in 1958, with Jim Rennie Sr., Tom Steele, Bill Ross, Bill Speerstra and George Wilson as directors. Steele also served as the first president. In February 1962 the name was changed to the Canadian Public Relations Society, Calgary. The society held lunch time talks and professional development seminars for its members; worked with Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary to development public relations educational programs; and supported a national accreditation system for public relations practitioners. Calgary hosted national CPRS conferences in 1968, 1978 and 1986.
In 1979 the Calgary chapter created the Town Crier awards program to recognize local excellence in the profession. Calgary members have taken an active role in the national Canadian Public Relations Society: David G. Wood became the first western Canadian president in 1970, B.D. McAsey served as president in 1981, and Cynthia Balfour became the first woman on the national executive in 1982.
