The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy originated in 1891 in Quebec and adopted its present name in 1898. The principal functions of the Institute were to advance studies connected with economic production of minerals and metals and to promote interaction of those involved in such production. The activities of the Institute include regular meetings, publication, and the maintenance of a library. There are numerous local branches and student clubs at Canadian universities. The Calgary, Alberta branch was established in 1949 and it has carried on an active program of technical meetings and social activities. The name was changed to the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum in the 1990s.
