Administrative history
The Alberta Stockyards Company was incorporated in 1903 to provide a location in Calgary for the assembly of cattle for marketing. The major promoters were Patrick Burns, F.W. Black, R.B. Bennett and Henry Pierce. In the 1950s auction selling was introduced. Sheep and pigs were a prominent part of the market until sheep were phased out in the 1960s and pigs were sold through a marketing board in the 1970s. By the 1970s the company was a division of Marathon Realty Company Ltd., Canadian Pacific Railway's (CPR) real estate arm. It was reorganized as a new company, the Calgary Public Livestock Market Ltd., in 1980. For further information see Cows, Cowboys, Cattlemen and Characters / Leonard Friesen. -- Airdrie, Alberta : L.
