Administrative history

The Calgary and Edmonton Railway Co. was incorporated in 1890 to build a railway from Calgary to Edmonton and from Calgary to Fort Macleod. It received a land grant of 2560 hectares for each mile of railway constructed. The Calgary and Edmonton Land Co., incorporated in 1891, sold and administered these lands, retaining the mineral rights. The land company was administered by Osler, Hammond and Nanton of Winnipeg until its voluntary liquidation in 1928. Its holdings were transferred to the Calgary and Edmonton Corporation Ltd. which was incorporated in 1929. The corporation carried on extensive petroleum exploration and development and made regular annual dividends after 1935. In 1962 it was acquired by Canadian Superior Oil of California, Ltd. For further information see Kirk N. Lambrecht and John Gilpin's article, "The Land Grant to the Calgary and Edmonton Railway Company" in Alberta Law Review. -- vol. 32, no. 1 (1994), p. 71-92.
