After selling the company in 1993 he entered politics as the Reform Party Member of Parliament for the Edmonton Southwest district; he was re-elected in 1997. McClelland served as critic for Public Service Renewal (1995-1996), International Trade (1994), Science, Research and Development (1994), Transport (1994), Industry (1994-1995), and Human Resources Development (1994-1997). In 2000, McClelland stepped down from federal politics to run in the Province of Alberta as a Progressive Conservative. He held the riding of Edmonton-Rutherford from 2001-2004 until he was defeated by Rick Miller.
