Biographical history

Cecil Swanson, 1889-1984, was born in London, England. He came to Canada in 1908. He graduated in theology from Wycliffe College, Toronto, in 1913. He was ordained an Anglican priest in Dawson City the same year, and subsequently served in the Yukon, NWT and Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He then moved to Lethbridge, where he was made Archdeacon in 1929. He served at St. Stephen's in Calgary, 1932-1940, at Christ Church in Vancouver, 1940-1953, and as rector at St. Paul's, Toronto before retiring to Calgary in 1960. Swanson received the Order of Canada and an honorary doctorate from the University of Calgary in 1972. Cecil Swanson School in Calgary was named in his honour in 1980. He married Enid May Schreiber, ?-1970, and they had three daughters, Cecilie (Parke), 1920-2014, Vera (Burns), 1915-2003, and Beatrice (Armstrong), 1918-2006.

The fonds consists of scrapbook; speech; guestbooks; photographs of the family, Anglican missionaries and the Yukon; manuscript of The Days of my Sojourning; and newsclippings. Includes sympathy cards sent to daughter after his death; also recording of Swanson singing grace at Old Time Rangemen's Dinner, 1976.
