Administrative history

The aims of the Archaeological Society of Alberta are to promote interest in the archaeology of Alberta; to provide leadership, advice and assistance in the proper methods of excavating archaeological sites; and to actively support the recording, studying and protection of archaeological sites. To meet these aims the society holds annual meetings, develops special programs, and publishes the semi-annual Alberta Archaeological Review. Several local archaeologicl societies pre-dated the ASA: the Edmonton Centre was established in late1960 and incorporated in 1966; the Calgary Centre was established in 1961 and incorporated in 1964; and the Lethbridge Centre was incorporated in 1968. In 1975 the Archaeological Society of Alberta was created at the instigation of these three existing groups. Later local affiliates include the South Eastern Alberta Archaoelogical Society, based in Medicine Hat, and the Peace Centre, based in Peace River country.
