The Apeiron Society for the Practice of Philosophy is a non-profit Society founded in 1987 by Petra von Morstein, formerly Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calgary and now Professor Emerita, who served as President until 2003.

Functions, occupations and activities

The Apeiron Society is a public forum for the exploration of philosophical ideas and methods in the context of actual life issues. Its main activities comprise bi-monthly seminars and group discussions featuring invited speakers. Speakers come from a variety of disciplines besides Philosophy, including: Art, Biomedical Ethics, Literature, Mathematics, Religious Studies, Sociology, Political Science, and Psychology. Its main activities comprise bi-monthly seminars and group discussions featuring invited speakers. Activities of The Apeiron Society are organized by an Executive Committee consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officers and a Social Convener. Annual seasons typically begin in early September and conclude in early May with a week-end symposium at Kananaskis.

Mandates/sources of authority

The Apeiron Society's mission is to encourage the contribution of philosophy to everyday life by organizing lectures, discussions, seminars, workshops focusing on philosophical questions, methods, and ideas in the context of lived experience; and to promote any activities conducive to this end. Participation in the activities of the Apeiron Society does not require any specialization or academic background. Members and non-members alike are welcome to attend meetings.
