Biographical history

Although there were Anglican services held in the Coaldale, Alberta area in the 1920s the Anglican Japanese Mission in Alberta situated in Coaldale did not begin until 1945. Gordon G. Nakayama was appointed by the Church Missionary Society to minister to Japanese Canadians who had been sent to southern Alberta during the Second World War. At first services were held in a nearby Mennonite church, but in 1947 Rev. Nakayama arranged for a building formerly used by Japanese evacuees in Slocan City, British Columbia to be moved to Coaldale and reassembled as the Anglican Church of the Ascension. The Parish of Coaldale was established in 1955 in 1964 a new church was built. Rev. Nakayama went into semi-retirement in 1970, and made a number of mission trips around the world in the 1970s. Rev. Rodney Andrews became the second parish priest.
