Alexander Hunter Murray, 1818-1874, was born at Kilmun, Argyll, Scotland. He began working for the American Fur Company in the 1840s, and in 1846 moved to the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). He served in the Mackenzie district under Murdoch McPherson. In 1847 he established Fort Yukon where he served until 1851. Due to failing health he was transferred to Pembina and later served at Rainy Lake, Swan River and Lower Fort Garry, Manitoba. Murray retired in 1867 to Red River. He married Anne Campbell and had several children.
