Administrative history

Policing of the area now known as the Province of Alberta began in 1874 with the creation of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP). In 1916, the agreement between the federal and Alberta governments regarding the policing of the province was not renewed. A provincial statute outlining the authority for a provincial police force was issued in 1917, and the Alberta Provincial Police was created. The force was increased and directed by a commissioner under the Alberta Police Act of 1919. The APP followed the NWMP's example in almost every phase of work, and many members were originally from the NWMP. The province was divided into six subdivisions with offices in Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, Peace River, and Grande Prairie. An Inspector headed each division and was responsible to the Superintendent in Edmonton. The force was disbanded in 1932 and its responsibilities taken over by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). For further information see "Alberta's Own : The Provincial Police" / Lesley A. McIntaggart. -- University of Calgary : unpublished MA thesis, 1995; and "The Alberta Provincial Police" / Sean Moir. -- University of Alberta : unpublished MA thesis, 1991.
