Administrative history
Policing of the area now known as the Province of Alberta began in 1874 with the creation of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP). In 1916, the agreement between the federal and Alberta governments regarding the policing of the province was not renewed. A provincial statute outlining the authority for a provincial police force was issued in 1917, and the Alberta Provincial Police was created. The force was increased and directed by a commissioner under the Alberta Police Act of 1919. The APP followed the NWMP's example in almost every phase of work, and many members were originally from the NWMP. The province was divided into six subdivisions with offices in Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, Peace River, and Grande Prairie. An Inspector headed each division and was responsible to the Superintendent in Edmonton. The force was disbanded in 1932 and its responsibilities taken over by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). For further information see "Alberta's Own : The Provincial Police" / Lesley A. The fonds consists of accused persons files (related to crimes such as arson, bank robbery, cattle rustling, horse stealing, juvenile delinquency, kidnapping, liquor traffic, murder, prostitution, seduction, and suicide), which were handled by Detective Alexander "Scotty" Lawrence of Lethbridge; criminal identification forms including descriptions and photographs of criminals; diaries and case evidence notebook of Thomas S. Symons, officer with the Brooks detachment; records of Chief Detective J.D. Nicholson concerning the investigation and trial of Emilio Picariello and Florence Lassandro; notebook of Constable Willmott Maddison (1921-1923).
