Biographical history

Agnes Isabel Aston Hill, 1894-1964, was born in England and came to Calgary, Alberta ca. 1914. She wrote poetry and in 1928 published her first work. She won numerous awards for her poems including the Governor-General's Silver Medal in 1941. Besides poetry she also wrote short stories and articles. Between 1930 and 1940 she wrote a weekly column in the Calgary Herald entitled "The Junior Corner". In 1962 Through the Years, a volume of her collected poems, was published. She was a member of the Canadian Authors Association and the SPCA. She and her husband, Henry, had two children, Sylvia (Allan) and Ivan.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of personal correspondence, fan mail (including letters from Nellie McClung), copies of her poetry, short stories and articles, rough drafts of Through the Years, publications containing her writings, and newsclippings and scrapbooks pertaining to her work. Includes one file of poems by her daughter, Sylvia Allan. Also consists of photographs of the Hill family and mountain and Klondike views. Includes correspondence with George Garbutt while he was serving overseas during the Second World War.
