Allan, Thoburn Stephens

Thoburn Stephens Allan was born on April 23rd, 1896 in Nelson, British Columbia. In 1913 he entered into the Arts Faculty at McGill University and while there received training as a militia officer with the McGill contingent of the Canadian Officer's Training Corps. In 1916 Allan enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, serving with the Royal Canadian Regiment. Allan received several honours during his time of service including the Military Cross for gallantry while leading a company of soldiers during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. On August 26th, 1918, Allan died at Monchy-le Preux, near Arras, of wounds received during The Hundred Days Offensive. He is buried at Orange Hill Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Allen, Albert Philip

Albert Philip Allen was born in Sissinghurst, Kent, on January 23, 1888. After immigration to Canada Allen worked as a painter before enlisting with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on September 21, 1914 and served with the 5th battalion. Allen survived the war and eventually settled in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

Allen, Horace
Person

Horace Allen was born in Wales and came to Alberta with his family in 1916. His father, Peter, was a miner in the Crowsnest Pass and about 1917 became manager of the Rosedeer Mine in the Drumheller coal field at Wayne, Alberta. Horace taught school at Wayne and after 1938 in Coleman. The high school in Coleman is named after him.

Allen, Hugh Wright

Hugh Wright Allen, 1889-1972, born in Stella, Ontario, was educated as a school teacher and employed as a chemist before deciding to come west. In 1911 he married Mable Sills, and they moved to the Beaverlodge district of Alberta's Peace River country, where they farmed. In the 1926 provincial election he was elected as United Farmers of Alberta member for Peace River. A major concern of this constituency was the construction of new railway lines to develop the north. Allen remained in office until 1935, the last two years as Minister of Lands, Mines and Municipal Affairs. He then began a new career in the Peace's agro-economic development. Through his efforts, the Alberta Livestock Cooperative was formed in 1940 and he served as the first president. From 1946 to 1964 he was on the board of directors of the United Grain Growers. In 1964 he sold the farm and retired to Grande Prairie with his second wife, the former Mrs. Lulu Sherk Edgerton. He was inducted into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1967.

Allen, Samuel Evans Stokes

Samuel Evans Stokes Allen, 1874-1945, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, and received his MA from Yale in 1897. Between 1891 and 1895 he climbed and explored the Rocky Mountains in the Lake Louise area of Alberta, and printed a map of the mountains. He never returned to the mountains and suffered from symptoms of dementia a few years later, which resulted in his confinement for more than 40 years.

Allen, Walter Joseph

Walter Joseph Allen was an English sculptor employed on the construction of the Canadian Parliament Centre Block. Allen worked as the superintendent of the modeling and carving shop and was responsible for the team of carvers from April 1917 to June 1924.

Allergoth, Henry

Henry Allergoth, 1902-1972, was born in Oslo, Norway and moved to Canada with his parents in 1904. He began teaching in 1923 and moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1943, where he taught at Riverside School, Alexandra Junior High, and Medicine Hat High School. He was very active in theatre in Medicine Hat, and directed many local productions. He was instrumental in the establishment of a local high school drama festival, and served on the executive of the Alberta Drama League, Medicine Hat Civic Theatre, and Medicine Hat Musical Theatre. He retired in 1967. He and his wife, Blanche, had two daughters, Gail (Meier) and Betty Lou (Douglas).

Allison, Edwin

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Allison and their three sons, Ed, Reg, and Ken, emigrated from Yorkshire, England to the Delburne area of Alberta in 1906. They settled near Content and established the Grange Dairy Farm. The children attended Great Bend School, which consolidated with Mound Lake School District in 1919. Ed married May Gilbert in 1921, and they had three children, Lowell, Allon and June (Campbell). He served on the Great Bend School Board for several years. He, and later his sons, took over the family farm.
