Wares family

Donald Wares, 1872-1950, was born in Caithness, Scotland and moved to Calgary in 1908. He worked for the Revelstoke Lumber Company until his retirement in 1935. He and his wife, Julia, ?-1953, had two sons, Donald Edward, 1912-1986, and Edward "Eddie", 1916-1992. Donald worked for the Shell Oil Company for many years and was an enthusiastic amateur photographer. He was married to Ethel Love, daughter of James Edward Love and step-daughter of Anah Mary Dafoe Love. Eddie was a well-known athlete who was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1980.

Wigg family

William Wigg, 1823-1913, was born in England, moved to the USA ca. 1870 and lived in Idaho. He homesteaded in the Lewisville area near Wetaskiwin, Alberta in 1892, at the age of 70. His son, Charles, ?-1957, homesteaded on an adjacent property and a daughter, Nellie, ?-1932, joined them soon after. Both Charles and Nellie were keen photographers and for many years developed their own films. The family raised a fairly large herd of Shorthorn cattle and Berkshire pigs.

Wing family

The Wing family were Calgary, Alberta residents in the 1910s and early 1920s. Annie M. Wing was the widow of Abel Wing. Annie had a number of relatives living with her, some or all of which may have been her children: Hazel M., Windalene, Robert W. and W. Cameron. Hazel was a stenographer, Robert a clerk, and W. Cameron an employee of Western Credit Men's Association. One of Hazel and Windalene may have married into the Phillips and the other the McEwan families.

Wood, John Taylor family

John Taylor Wood, 1830-1904, was the son of Robert C. Wood and Anne Taylor, who was the daughter of American President Zachary Taylor. He was a US naval officer, who resigned at the outbreak of the American Civil War. He served on the Confederate warship CSS Virginia, and then in the Confederate Army. After the war, in about 1865, he settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1856 he married Lola Mckubin, and they had eleven children, including Zachary Taylor Wood, Eleanor McKubin Wood (later Mrs. Duncan Campbell) and Charles Carroll Wood. Zachary Taylor Wood, 1860-1915, grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario in 1882. He served with the Winnipeg Mounted Rifles during the 1885 Riel Rebellion, then on August 1, 1885 joined the North-West Mounted Police. He served under Sam Steele in British Columbia, and then at several posts in Alberta, before being posted to the Yukon in 1897 during the Klondike Gold Rush. He was made Assistant-Commissioner of the Yukon's NWMP in 1902, and remained in the North until 1910. In that year he returned to Regina and became the Deputy-Commissioner of the Mounted Police. He married Frances Augusta Daly in 1888 in Napanee, and they had two children, Stuart Taylor Wood and John Taylor Wood (known as Jack). Stuart Taylor Wood, 1889-1966, was born in Napanee, Ontario. He graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario in 1912, and then joined the Royal North-West Mounted Police. He served in the cavalry during the First World War. After the war he returned to the RNWMP and was stationed at Herschel Island, Yukon from 1919 to 1924. From 1938 until his retirement in 1951 he was the 9th Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In 1937 he attended the coronation of King George VI in England, and in 1939, as head of the Mounties, was involved in the Royal Visit to Canada of King George and Queen Elizabeth. He had a keen interest in researching the history of the North-West Mounted Police, which he pursued during the 1940s and 1950s. He was instrumental in the re-birth of the original Fort Walsh site as a horse-breeding station for the RCMP. He married M. Gertrude Daily and they had five children, John Taylor Wood, 1931-1991, Herschel Theodore Taylor Wood, 1924-1950, Frances Helen Taylor Wood (Poulsen), 1937- , Donald Zachary Taylor Wood (known as Zack), and Marjorie Lola Taylor Wood, 1941-2012.

Zack Taylor Wood, 1918-1944, graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, and in 1940 joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He rose to the rank of Flight Lieutenant, and served overseas during the Second World War. He was killed on October 14, 1944 when the plane he was piloting on a mission from England to Germany crashed after its engine caught fire. He married Mignonne Elaine Castonguay in 1942 and they had one daughter, Sheryl Ann Taylor Wood.

Kober family

Otto Kober and his family came to Trochu, Alberta from Arkansas, USA. Their children were William, 1909-1983 (also know as Lone Breeze or Lane Berry), Herman, Edward, Victor, Arthur, Otto, Irvin, 1913-1940, Albert N., Mrs. Roberts, and Mrs. Bachelder. William and Herman were active rodeo competitors, including at the Calgary Stampede. For many years Herman and William lived near Cochrane.

McGuffin family

Dr. William Herbert McGuffin, 1886-1949, was born in London, Ontario and graduated in 1910 from the University of Western Ontario. He established the McGuffin Radium and X-Ray Institute in 1911. With Dr. John McEachern he helped organize the Alberta Cancer Society. He and his wife, Gertrude, ?-1963, had two children, Muriel (Bice) and Jean (Trammell). Dr. Chester F. McGuffin, 1883-1958, graduated from Western in 1904 and practiced with his brother William. In 1921 he pioneered physical medicine. He and his wife, Enid Mabel, ?-1963, had two children, W.C., ?-1944, and Mary (Rowe). Dr. Gordon L. McGuffin, ?-1961, also praticed as a physician in Calgary. He and his wife, Mary Margaret, 1900-1983, had two sons, Gordon A. and John W.

Oaks family

Arthur William "Daddy" Oaks, 1865-1937, joined the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in 1885 and transferred to Calgary, Alberta in 1887. He was involved in a variety of business ventures after his discharge and in 1907 joined Plunkett and Savage. In the First World War he served in the 56th Battalion and in the 1920s was active in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Veterans Association. He and his wife, Mary Elizabeth MacDonald, ?-1937, had six children, Donald J., James George McCullough, 1902-?, Douglas H., Arthur William, 1899-?, George MacDonald, 1898-1898, and Millie (Green). James lived and worked extensively in the Turner Valley oil fields.

Crowe family

Thomas James Crowe, ?-1969, and his wife, Caroline Matilda Edmison, 1874-1943, came to Calgary, Alberta from Ontario about 1914. They had four children, Florence, ca. 1909- , Eleanor (Grant), George E., and Harold J. They were active in boating and skiing. Florence worked for the Calgary Herald before moving to Vancouver.

Hewson family

John Arthur Hewson, 1867-1944, was born in County Limerick, Ireland and came to Fort Macleod, Alberta in 1896. He ranched south of the town near the Blood reserve, and was active in polo. The ranch was called "Darragh". He retired to Calgary in 1934. He and his wife, Emily Fitch Curtis, had four children, Kathleen (Dunford), William, ?-[1914-1918], George John, 1904-?, and Lillias Hardy, 1898-1898.

Erb family

George N. Erb was born in Colina, New Brunswick and married Eliza "Lide". They had one daughter, Lottie Ellena (Kelly). They moved to Calgary, Alberta where George worked in construction and also operated a flour and feed company under the name Erb and Anderson. He was a Calgary alderman in 1909. His nephew, Richard Nelson Erb, 1889-1984, was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, USA and came to Calgary in 1907. He worked in construction and later for the Calgary Municipal Railway in 1910. During 1911 and 1912 he operated a grocery store under the name Gray and Erb with partner William J. Gray. He first married Edna Totten in 1911 and they had one son, Mel, ?-1914. He later married Hazel and they had one son, Richard Bryan, 1931- .
