In 1878 he settled at Prince Albert, becoming the first civilian physician to practice in the North-West Territories. During the First World War he served as medical officer for the 218th Regiment. Following the war, he operated a sanatorium for tubercular ex-soldiers in southern Alberta. He retired to Edmonton and was an investor in the coal mining industry.
